Above are the scans for this interesting badge find. It is a WWI 214th Battalion collar badge. Its condition appears to be what we call a "digup". One can see the remnants of enameling (typical of sweethearts) but it has suffered from image deterioration which looks like it was weathered in the ground. May have been a battlefield find. It still has its cross pin attachment (typical of sweethearts) intact and functional. Not a common battalion for badge finds either.
We have included a sample of what the design was like, minus the enameling, in its original state. That badge is NOT part of this sale, and is shown for information purposes only
Formed in mid 1916. This battalion was raised in Central Saskatchewan, with headquarters in Wadena. Sailed for England in April of 1917,and was used to resupply the 15th Reserve Battalion.
Sweetheart badges and pins were often given to a female loved one, by their soldier lover, son (usually), or father. They
could have been supplied, for a cost, by the quartermaster or by a private organization, such as Birks. Most were simply converted uniform devises from the regiment, and were available in the
tuck shops. Many, if not all of the battalions and regiments had this type of inspirational badge. As the war wore on, many of the givers were lost, and did not return. Consequently, these
items became very cherished by their recipients. Therefore they are generally called sweethearts?
