These brass tins were issued to members of the BEF serving in Europe at the beginning of WWI. They were Christmas presents given by Queen Mary (wife of George V) to the troops serving in the trenches. Some Canadian units also received these Christmas presents that year, and also at Christmas 1915 as well.

They were made of brass and filled with either chocolate, tobacco, or cigarettes, or a combination thereof. 
(Imagine the logistics of that exercise! The soldiers got to choose what they wanted and the info was transmitted to the gift givers.) No computers back then...
