Some History ... The Ontario Regiment was officially formed from the nine independent rifle companies on September 14, 1866. Served during the Riel Rebellion of 1885. It was named the 34th (Ontario) Battalion of Infantry.In September 1915, the Second-in-Command (2IC) of the 34th (Ontario) Battalion, Major Sam Sharpe was authored to raise the 116th Battalion CEF. Between the wars the unit was re-rolled as a tank battalion and became one of the first units to comprise the newly-formed Royal Canadian Armoured Corps in 1936.The unit was mobilized for WW2 on September 4, 1939. Within six days 594 men had enlisted for active service. In June 1941, the regiment sailed from Halifax to Scotland. On 21 December 1941 the regiment moved to Brighton, in operational roles in the defence of the English coast. They served with distinction in the Sicily and Italian campaigns, seeing action in the fierce Ortona salient as well as others.This regiment is still presently an active regiment in the Canadian Army.
