Above you may view the scans for this field-made version of the cap badge for the 6th CEF battalion. Made from a general list badge, with an original tang type attachment (view scans) with copper metal number "6" overlay. Since this battalion was one of the "First to Fight" in 1914, It is quite possible that this badge came about due to the lack of resources at that early stage of the war. A fine example of this rare 100 year old badge.
The 6th Battalion CEF was raised in Manitoba and mobilized out of Val Cartier, Quebec during the summer of 1914. After some training they left for England on October 3rd, 1914 with 1155 officers and men. Upon arrival they formed the first Canadian Cavalry Depot unit and continued so until the beginning of 1916 when they re-organized as the Fort Garry Horse of the Canadian Cavalry Brigade.
