You are viewing a brass anodized version cap badge for the 51st Soo Rifles. In excellent condition with its original "tang" type fastener. Now called the 49th Field Artillery Regiment, RCA. Sault Ste Marie, Ontario is the current location for this regiment which is part of the 31st brigade Group of the current 4th Canadian Division.

This regiment has a proud history which dates back to the debut of the 19th century...It got its start in 1802 when a detachment of the British 49th Regiment of Foot was stationed in the area at Fort St. Joseph. By 1900, a new Regiment called the 97th Regiment Algonquin Rifles was formed in Sault Ste. Marie, sending volunteers to the South African War. It formed companies from volunteers from Thessalon, Sudbury, and Sturgeon Falls. in the North Central Ontario region. 1913 saw the 51st Regiment, soon to be known as the Soo Rifles, come into existence. It is this period to which the above badge originated.

With the outbreak of WWI, one company consisting of 125 men including all ranks, under Captain J. Johnston traveled to England with the 2nd Canadian Infantry Battalion. In 1915, a second company went overseas with the 19th Battalion CEF. In 1916 this was followed by a third detachment from Sault Ste. Marie of 150 men joining the 37th Battalion.
