You are viewing a vintage CEF WWI era113th Battalion officer grade collar Badge.The 113th Battalion, was also known as the "Lethbridge Highlanders".  The straight pin type attachment  is original and in good order. That type of broach style attachment may aslo suggest that this badge could be a "Sweetheart". A very hard to find badge from the CEF era of the beginning of the 20th century. This badge is made of fine highly detailed copper using the stamping method...


The battalion was raised in Southern Alberta, with headquarters in Lethbridge. The unit began recruiting during the winter of 1915/16 and sailed for England on September 27th,1916. The 113thbattalion, composed of 913 members,became part of the 17th Reserve Battalion already stationed in England...


Sweetheart badges and pins were often given to a female loved one, by their soldier lover, son (usually), or father. They could have been supplied, for a cost, by the quartermaster or by a private organization, such as Birks. Most were simply converted uniform devises from the regiment, and were available in the tuck shops. Many, if not all of the battalions and regiments had this type of inspirational badge. As the war wore on, many of the givers were lost, and did not return. Consequently, these items became very cherished by their recipients. Therefore they are generally called sweethearts.
