You are viewing a rare WW1 era CEF collar badge, for the 5th Mounted Rifles. This specimen is made of brass, with both original lugs intact and in good order. It has very crisp design details. 

The 5th Mounted Rifle Battalion was organized in Sherbrooke, Quebec in March of 1915. Upon reaching Europe, this battalion served in France & Holland until 1920. Mounted Rifle units, were actually infantry units on horseback. With the demise of Cavalry in WWI due to the rise of mechanization, many of these units became infantry in the trenches.
