History... The Perth regiment was an infantry regiment of the Canadian Army until 1965, when the Liberals took power under Lester B. Pearson. But this regiment had a long history, however. It was founded in 1866 as the "28th Perth Battalion of Infantry", just in time for Confederation. The regiment went through several name changes during its lifetime. In 1900 it was designated the "28th Perth Regiment". By 1920 it was called simply "The Perth Regiment". In 1936 it became The "Perth Regiment (M.G.)". After the war started in 1941 it was re-designated "The Perth Regiment (Motor)". During the war they served in Italy with the 5th Canadian Armored Division as well as in North-West Europe at the close of hostilities in 1945, using their war time cap badge. View this at http://www.shoulder-to-shoulder.net/Product/922 . When the war was over, it was given its original designation again, "The Perth Regiment". In 1954, the regiment was amalgamated to form the Highland Light Infantry of Canada along with the Waterloo Regiment. This was not a successful amalgamation and in 1957 the two units reverted to their former designations. On 28 February 1965, the Perth Regiment was reduced to nil strength and disbanded.
