The West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own) (14th Regiment a Foot) was an infantry regiment of the British Army. In 1958 it amalgamated with the East Yorkshire Regiment (15th Foot) to form the Prince of Wales's Own Regiment of Yorkshire which was, on 6 June 2006, amalgamated with the Green Howards and the Duke of Wellington's Regiment (West Riding) to form theYorkshire Regiment. The regiment served in the American Revolutionary War, The Napoleonic Wars, India, Canada and the Crimea. During 1880 the British army saw major changes, The Childers Reforms. The 14th was then given the title "The Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment)" They went on to serve in the Boer War during which two members received the Victoria Cross for Galantry. They went in with the first wave of the BEF in WWI as part of the 18th Brigade in the 6th Division and at the ill-fated battle of Gallipoli. During the Second World War, the West Yorks served in the Far East throughout the Burma Campaign, fighting in the British Fourteenth Army. In 1948 the 1st and 2nd Battalions were amalgamated and were stationed in Austria. They then moved to Egypt and on to Malaya. After a stint of duty in Northern Ireland in 1955-56, the 1st Battalion took part in the Suez Operation and was then stationed in Dover until the amalgamation in July 1958.
